Frequently Asked Questions
How much should I tip at a restaurant in the US?▼
18–20% for standard table service is the current norm; 15% for adequate service and 22–25% for exceptional service. For large groups, check the receipt — a gratuity of 18–20% is often already added.
Do I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?▼
Etiquette says the pre-tax subtotal, and no server will object. In practice most people tip on the total because it is the number they see — on a typical bill the difference is under a dollar.
How does the bill split work?▼
The calculator divides both the tip and the total evenly across the number of people, showing each person’s tip and total separately, so everyone knows exactly what to put in.
What is a quick way to estimate a tip in my head?▼
Move the decimal one place left for 10% (e.g. $84 → $8.40), then double it for 20% ($16.80) or add half of it for 15% ($12.60). The calculator does the exact math for you.
Does this work without internet at the restaurant?▼
Yes — once loaded, the page works completely offline. Nothing you enter is sent anywhere.
