Frequently Asked Questions
How do I add sales tax to a price?▼
Multiply the pre-tax price by (1 + rate). At 7.25%, a $100 item costs $100 × 1.0725 = $107.25. The "Add tax" mode does this instantly.
How do I remove tax from a tax-included total?▼
Divide the total by (1 + rate) — do not subtract the percentage. A $107.25 total at 7.25% is $107.25 ÷ 1.0725 = $100 net. Subtracting 7.25% from $107.25 would wrongly give $99.48.
What is the difference between sales tax and VAT?▼
US sales tax is added at the register on top of the sticker price; VAT (Europe) and GST (India, Australia, and others) are usually already included in the displayed price. That is why the "Remove tax" mode is so useful for VAT receipts and invoices.
Are the quick-pick rates always correct?▼
They are common base rates. US totals often include additional city or county tax on top of the state base, and VAT/GST rates have reduced bands for certain goods — always confirm your exact local rate.
Can I use this for invoices and expense reports?▼
Yes — backing tax out of receipts is exactly what the "Remove tax" mode is for. If you create invoices, our Invoice Generator applies GST/VAT/sales tax automatically.
